AI coding tools are rapidly becoming the standard in software development, with around 64% of companies now generating most of their code using AI. This figure could rise to 90% within a year as adoption accelerates.
The main driver is productivity—top engineering teams using AI tools report up to double the output (measured in pull requests) compared to those using them less. Autonomous AI agents are also increasingly handling coding tasks independently, contributing a growing share of development work.
However, experts note that while AI boosts speed, it doesn’t always improve code quality or maintainability, meaning human oversight and engineering discipline remain essential.
